This Indiana City Requires a Special Permit to Hold a Dance
My son has a pretty cool job that allows him to travel and dress up as dinosaurs and other characters. I went with him on a gig recently and learned something about the city of Terre Haute, Indiana that might make you cut loose - But don't!
No Dance Parties in This City
The event was held at the Vigo County Library, which is an amazing resource for the area. They have state-of-the-art sound and lighting systems, video projectors, I'm talking everything you would need to throw a dance party. Well, everything except a permit from the city.
Part of the character program involves audience participation and a dance party. The performers were asked to refrain from using the words dance party because they didn't have a special permit - What? Instead, everyone had a super fun party.
This is Not a Joke
At first, we thought it was an ongoing joke or something. no dancing, just like in the movie Footloose. No, this is an actual ordinance that requires a permit to hold a dance party. This doesn't apply to private birthday parties, dance classes, and a few other exceptions like 21+ bars.
Why Can't We Just Dance?
This ordinance came about to try and keep large public gatherings safe. I guess if you get too many people cutting loose things can escalate quickly. Now, you can pay for a permit, and follow the guidelines, and still have a dance party. But, if you are caught hosting one of these crazy dance parties without a permit, you could face a fine.
