Two of the Country’s Worst Cities for Recreation are Right Here in Indiana

There's no denying how important it is to stay active, especially for our mental and physical health. It's more important than ever for cities to offer residents a variety of ways to stay active. Some cities do a better job than others, and according to a recent study, a couple of cities in Indiana really need to step up their game.

I will be the first to acknowledge that some of the reports/studies I see are just plain silly - sharing information that no one could possibly care about. I do think, though, that this particular study from WalletHub is interesting, even bordering on important. The report looks at the 100 biggest cities in America and ranks them from the best to worst for recreation.

The rankings were determined by looking at data in the following main categories and dozens of sub-categories...

• Entertainment & Recreational Facilities: The number of music venues, beaches, tennis courts, baseball fields, hiking trails, fishing spots, and many others.
• Costs: How much does it cost to bowl or see a movie? What is the average gym membership? Things like that.
• Quality of Parks: Acres of parkland and the number of parks/playgrounds.
• Weather

Indiana Has Two Cities in the Bottom 10

After all of the data was collected and the numbers were crunched, it was determined that Indianapolis and Fort Wayne are two of the worst cities in America for recreation. Here's how they scored.

#91. Indianapolis got decent scores in the first two categories - 47th for Entertainment & Recreational Facilities and 23rd for Costs. What really hurt Naptown were the Quality of Parks (95th) and Weather (99th) categories.

#94. Fort Wayne really only had a good score in one category, ranking 3rd in the country for Costs. Fort Wayne ranked 80th for Entertainment & Recreational Facilities, 92nd for Quality of Parks, and 96th for Weather.
