This should be obvious, but if you take something that isn't yours, it's stealing. And guess what? Stealing is a crime. If you trespass on someone's property, and destroy or deface a sign in their year, that is also a crime. Local law enforcement want to remind you that messing with political signs, you could get arrested and have to pay fines.

You might've seen the political sign that was spray painted with racist curse words in Newburgh. That is an example of what not to do. If you don't agree with your neighbor's politics, you can get your own sign. Even better, you can go to the polls on November 3, and actually make a change.

The Sheriff’s Office is aware of the increased political campaign signs being stolen or damaged in our community. This, unfortunately, happens in most election cycles. Regardless of your political views or stances, these signs belong to someone and plain and simple if you take a sign which doesn’t belong to you, it is a crime. Certainly, members of our community join us in welcoming civil discourse on political and social issues. In the United States of America we are blessed to stand and speak for that which we believe. We understand that emotions are high with the upcoming election, but whatever your political views or opinions, theft is theft – and it’s unlawful. Theft and Criminal Trespass are both Class A Misdemeanors under Indiana law, and offenders convicted of a Class A Misdemeanor face penalties of up to 1 year in jail and a $5,000 fine. Although it’s not what we want to do, but if you’re caught in Posey County taking property, which you have no permission to take, you may be charged.
