Over the weekend, my husband asked me what does Grammy stand for?  Is it short for Grandma, Grandmother?  Well, it could be, but, not in the case of The Grammy Awards.

My husband and I have been together for 5 years now and it never occurred to me that he didn't know what "Grammy's" stood for.

The Grammy's or the Grammy Awards got their name from a device that plays records called the gramophone which is an old type of record player.

The National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences decided to create an award in the '50's, first with the idea of calling the award an "Eddie" to honor the inventor of the phonograph, Thomas Edison. They finally decided on using Grammy after the invention of the gramophone by Emile Berliner in 1877.  The first Grammy Awards was held in 1958.
