This Iconic Diner Was Named Indiana’s Best Hole-in-the-Wall Restaurant
There was a time when referring to a restaurant as a "hole in the wall" might have been perceived as an insult, but that couldn't be further from the truth these days. I think we can all agree that hole-in-the-wall restaurants provide some of the best food and dining experiences.

These restaurants may not boast flashy exteriors or nationwide notoriety, but their charm, authenticity, and mouthwatering flavors make them cherished local secrets. I imagine there is a popular hole-in-the-wall restaurant in your town. Would you consider it the best in Indiana?
What is Indiana's Best Hole-in-the-Wall Restaurant?
The folks at LoveFood.com took on the task of naming the best hole-in-the-wall restaurant in each state. Those choices were based on genuine user reviews, awards, accolades, and the first-hand experience of the LoveFood team. It should go without saying (although I am saying it) that the selections are completely subjective.
Having said all that, the best hole-in-the-wall restaurant in Indiana is...the OASIS DINER in Plainfield!
The Oasis Diner has a pretty interesting origin story - the actual diner (the building itself) was manufactured in New Jersey and then shipped by railroad to Plainfield in 1954. There were a handful of owners in the following decades until the Oasis Diner eventually closed in 2008. Luckily it didn't stay closed for long. In 2010, Indiana Landmarks listed the Oasis Diner on their 10 Most Endangered Indiana Buildings list, which eventually led to it being relocated, restored, and reopened!
Another fun fact about the Oasis Diner is that it's located on the historic National Road (Route 40). In fact, it is the ONLY diner on the National Road in Indiana and is one of less than five historical diners to remain on US 40 from Cumberland, Maryland to Vandalia, Illinois.
Remember that the Oasis Diner, and other "hole in the wall" restaurants offer more than just a meal - they provide an experience. So, if you’re craving something unforgettable, skip the big chains and seek out a small, unassuming spot that’s sure to leave a lasting impression. You just might discover your new favorite place.
