I love baseball at every level: t-ball, coach pitch, live pitch, high school – you name it. These days, I’ve reached the point where I don’t even have to know the kids on the field to enjoy it. There’s just something great about watching young players having the time of their lives playing a game that so many of us grew up loving.

A Baseball Program That Inspires

And here in Evansville, there’s one group of ballplayers that everybody – seriously, everybody – should make time to watch this spring: the incredible athletes in the Highland Baseball Challenger League.

What The Challenger League Is All About

The Highland Challenger League gives kids with special needs the chance to experience the joy of baseball in a supportive and fun environment. It’s the kind of program that reminds you what sports are really all about – encouragement, teamwork, and big smiles.

The Important Role Of A Buddy

A program like this doesn’t run without an amazing group of volunteers, and one of the most important roles is serving as a “Buddy.” Buddies are the volunteers who are right there on the field during games, helping the Challenger athletes every step of the way. They assist at the plate, help them run the bases, and play alongside them in the field. Wherever the players go, their Buddies go too.

How To Volunteer With Highland Challenger Baseball

Being a Buddy is a fantastic opportunity for youth baseball teams, church youth groups, coworkers looking for a meaningful volunteer project, or even individuals who just want to give back to the community. If you’d like to volunteer, or know someone who might, you can learn more at HighlandChallengerBaseball.org. You can also reach out directly to league president Brian Kinsey by email.

Even if you’re not volunteering or don’t have a player involved, you’re still invited to come out and cheer these athletes on. The games take place each weekend at the Highland baseball fields on Evansville’s north side, and they’re guaranteed to put a smile on your face.
