Which Indiana City Landed in Bottom 10 for Recreation in New Study?
Why Recreation Matters for Your Health
We all know how important it is to stay active – physically, mentally, and socially. Maybe, for you, that means hitting the gym, taking a stroll, or playing in the park. The fact is, having easy access to recreational activities can make a huge difference in our overall well-being.
So, who’s doing the best (and worst) job of keeping their residents moving, active, and enjoying life outside the house? WalletHub answers that question after comparing data from the 100 largest U.S. cities.
Where Fort Wayne Landed in the Rankings
Fort Wayne is on the list, but unfortunately, you’re gonna have to scroll all the way down to find it. According to the study, Fort Wayne landed at #92 out of 100, making it one of the 10 worst cities in the country for recreation. Yikes! The rankings were based on factors like the number of parks, affordability of activities, weather, and access to entertainment and fitness facilities. Here’s how Fort Wayne stacked up:
- Ranked 75th for Entertainment & Recreational Facilities: The number of music venues, beaches, tennis courts, baseball fields, hiking trails, fishing spots, and many others.
- Ranked 6th for Costs: How much does it cost to bowl or see a movie? What is the average gym membership? Things like that.
- Ranked 90th for Quality of Parks: Acres of parkland and the number of parks/playgrounds.
- Ranked 96th for Weather: Speaks for itself

Fort Wayne's Bright Spot
It’s easy to focus on those last two categories, but overlook the positive. Fort Wayne is actually one of the most affordable cities for recreation, ranking 6th in the nation for costs. That means it’s cheaper to bowl, work out, or see a movie than in most other cities.
