End of an Era: Evansville’s Eastland Mall Says Goodbye to Food Court Favorite of 29 Years

Dear Mall, Please Don't Go
I love going to the mall and stopping in some of my favorite stores all in one place. And I guess that I have passed this on to my son. We make our regular rounds through Eastland Mall searching for Funko Pops, shoes, and cool t-shirts. Let me tell you, if BoxLunch and Hot Topic ever close, it will be the end of times for me!
Why are Malls Disappearing?
- E-commerce: The rise of online shopping has made it easier and more convenient for us to buy what we need without even leaving the couch.
- Changing consumer preferences: Younger generations, in particular, are more interested in experiences than material possessions. A lot of them prefer to spend their money on travel, dining out, and other experiences rather than shopping.
- Pandemic-related factors: The COVID-19 pandemic has accelerated the shift to e-commerce and has also made people more cautious about going out in public spaces. This has resulted in reduced foot traffic and sales for malls.

Farewell to a Food Court Favorite
Last week Great Steak 'America's Premier Cheesesteak' closed. Great Steak had been an Eastland Mall food court staple for 29 years. As much as I love our malls, I know that there is less traffic, and certainly fewer people stopping in to grab a meal at the food court.
