Christmas in July At Diamond Lake This Weekend in Owensboro

Diamond Lake Campground and Resort here in Owensboro-Daviess County is having a little fun of its own with the concept of Christmas in July.

CHRISTMAS ALL OVER OWENSBORO

The fun in Owensboro starts down on the riverfront Friday After 5 as they are also celebrating Christmas in July. We had the opportunity to talk with Santa Claus this morning and he and Mrs. Claus will be at McConnell Plaza. There is going to be a giant Christmas tree set up and they will be giving out candy canes and gifts to the children that come to visit with them.

KEEP THE CHRISTMAS SPIRIT ALL WEEKEND

If you head out to Diamond Lake starting around 11 a.m. the fun begins. They have activities through 9 p.m. that evening including Letters to Santa, a Candy Cane Hunt for kids only, and an ugly sweater/t-shirt contest. The most fun events of the whole weekend are the Camp Decoration and Golf Cart Decorating contests. Families are encouraged to go all out on their campsites and golf carts.

WHERE TO GET DECORATIONS

If you're thinking you might want to participate in the decorating contest and you don't have any Christmas decor head to Goodwill, St. Vincent De Paul, or some of the local thrift or consignment shops. They can hook you up for a great deal and I'm sure you will find some unique items that might even win you the contest.

Diamond Lake is making plans for the Slow Box Derby 2021.

For all those that are interested in participating, taking the "checkered flag", and winning the bragging rights for the year... here are the rules:

• No current, past or future Soap Box Derby cars
• Cars should be homemade
• Cars must have working steering and brakes
• Cars can be made from any material
• Cars can be any length but should not be wider
than a passenger car
• Cars must have a driver. There is no maximum
passenger number
• Driver must be at least 16 years old and must sign
a waiver
• Anyone in the car must wear full closed toed
shoes, long pants, a shirt and a helmet
This will be a timed race. The car must be able to turn corners. Drivers will be considered disqualified if they cross the finish line outside of the car. The course will run from the road in front of campsite T6 to just past D48.

Cars will be judged for:
Best Design
Most Spirited
Fastest Time
