One person is dead, and 19 other are injured after a car drove into a group of protesters at a rally in Charlottesville, Virginia.

According to USA Today, police in Charlottesville were in the process of dispersing the crowd at a “Unite the Right” rally when the driver of a silver Dodge Charger drove through, striking several in their path.

The targeted group were reportedly those opposed to the stance of the organizers of the rally who are against the planned removal of a statue of Confederate General Robert E. Lee.

Police began their attempt at dispersing crowds roughly 20 minutes before the scheduled start time of the rally after Charlottesville officials had determined the rally to be an “unlawful assembly” following violent clashes earlier in the day between those opposed to the statues removal and those in favor of it.

The identity of the driver of the vehicle (pictured above) has not been released, however they are in police custody. The name of the person who died, or those injured in the incident have been released as of this writing.

President Trump released a tweet shortly following the incident condemning the violence.

USA Today is providing updates to this story as they develop.
