The Evansville Region Solar Eclipse Task Force met for the final time before the big event on Monday, April 8, 2024. Many community representatives were on hand to provide updates on the solar eclipse events and some last-minute details.

Can I Watch The Total Solar Eclipse on the Ohio River in Indiana?

A representative from the United States Coast Guard said they will be watching for high water and debris that could affect boaters in the Ohio River. So, the answer is yes, you can certainly watch the once-in-a-lifetime total solar eclipse by boat.

Indiana Boating Laws Apply

If you are an avid boater, you should be familiar with the rules of the water. There will be patrols ensuring that everyone has a fun and safe experience.

Other Watercraft

If your plans are at one of Indiana's state parks (Lodging is currently sold out) The Department of Natural Resources says that you are allowed to head out in a kayak to experience the total solar eclipse.

If you have a kayak or boat, our lakes with launching ramps are certainly places where you can go to access the water to see the eclipse. Note that parking spaces will be limited to those available in existing lots, and lake permits will be required on boats launching at state parks, reservoirs and state forests.

Important Info:

The State of Emergency recently declared by the Governor of Indiana is designed to facilitate the efficient sharing of resources among emergency agencies across counties and state lines. It is important to note that this declaration does not imply any imminent threat or danger.

511in.org and goky.ky.gov are excellent resources for traffic updates leading into, and on, eclipse day.  Be sure you are monitoring “Traffic Speeds” to see where congestion may be building.
