There's no doubt we appreciate the job our first responders do here in Evansville. But how often do we take the time to tell them? The Evansville-Vanderburgh Public Library (EVPL) is giving you the chance to do that with the return of the Hearts for Heroes Program.

Thank a First Responder with the EVPL's Hearts for Heroes Program

Whether it's police officers, sheriff's deputies, and state troopers running into an active shooter situation like we saw recently at Walmart on Evansville's west side, firefighters responding to blazing infernos to try and save surrounding homes and businesses from being damaged, or paramedics doing everything in the power to keep someone alive after a serious accident or other emergency situation, our local first responders are a special breed who are willing to sacrifice their own safety for the sake of others.

While it may not seem like much, a simple message of thanks can make a world of difference in the lives of these local heroes. Just like you and me, it's nice to know you're appreciated for the work you do. And with Valentine's Day coming up soon, now is the perfect time to show them some love.

Now in its second year, the Hearts for Heroes program lets you show your appreciation with a handwritten note representatives from the EVPL will deliver to those individuals. According to Heather McKinney with the EVPL, the program "delivered more than 1,000 valentines to local firefighters, police officers, and medical staff" in 2022.

Each of the eight EVPL branches features a Hearts for Heroes mailbox along with blank valentines (see top photo). All you have to do is write your message and drop it in the box. Homemade cards will also be accepted if you or your child(ren) would rather give them a more personal touch.

The program isn't limited to first responders. Notes can also be made out to local doctors and nurses as well. Whoever you choose to thank, and whichever card option you go with, they must be in the mailbox of an EVPL branch by the end of the business day on Friday, February 10th.
