Your Wine Order Says More About You Than You Think

I’m not a huge drinker, but when it comes to wine, I’m game. Especially this time of year, when it’s nice outside, the patios are back in rotation, the weekends are feeling a little more relaxed, and nothing sounds better than a bottle of wine at a winery or even in your own kitchen.

National Wine Day was this week on May 25, so I’ve decided to take a closer look at which wine types people are actually searching for across the country and which types of wine are popular in different areas, and the results. The results are really interesting!

Everyone Has Their Go-To

Some people reach for a smooth Merlot with dinner. Others want something crisp, sweet, or bubbly. With so many styles to choose from, the question is, what is everyone actually pouring right now?

To find out, the team at Joybird analyzed 5 years of Google Trends search data to identify the most-searched wine type in every state. Here is what they found!

What Is America Drinking?

Moscato came out on top overall. Known for being sweet, light, and easy to drink, it ranked first in 18 states, leading across much of the South and the Midwest (which makes sense because I am a midwestern girl and that is for sure my favorite). So if you are an Evansville Moscato lover, you are very much in good company right now!

Merlot was right behind it, ranking first in 17 states, including much of the West and big states like Florida, Texas, and Pennsylvania. America is basically split right down the middle between sweet and bold, which is cool. I would say that describes me, too, sometimes.

What About Our Region?

Here is where it gets interesting for us right here in the Midwest. Moscato leads our entire region in search interest, which means our neighbors are keeping it sweet and fruity. Raise a glass, Evansville! 🍷

What the Rest of the Country Is Pouring

Prosecco is having a big moment in the Northeast. Connecticut, Maine, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, and Rhode Island are all searching for it more than anything else. Pinot Grigio showed up in New Jersey, North Carolina, South Carolina, and Vermont.

And then there were some states that went completely their own way. California searched for Cabernet Sauvignon the most, which makes total sense. Oregon went with Pinot Noir, New York chose Riesling, Hawaii picked Chardonnay, and Washington went with Shiraz. I can see how that makes sense for every single one of those, as it feels exactly right for those states.

So What Does Your Wine Order Say About You?

Whether you are a Moscato sweetheart, a Merlot loyalist, or a Prosecco kind of person, your pour says a lot more about you than you might think. And we are not here to judge anyone. Pour what makes you happy and enjoy every sip! 🍷☀️

Drop your go-to wine in the comments, and tell us which wineries you’re going to around here! I want to know where and what Evansville is really drinking this summer!
