Why You Should Check Your Grapes for Black Widow Spiders

Okay, my skin is officially crawling now. My wife just bought a new bunch of grapes, and then I hear this doggone story. Dang!

A surprisingly large number of people (700-800) report finding black widow spiders in their grapes. I know that number may seem small in comparison to the total number of people who buy grapes each year, but still, it's big enough to make me double-check from now on.

A woman in Nebraska recently discovered two black widows in a bag of grapes purchased at a grocery store. Black widows are one of the most venomous spiders in North America. It's reported that their venom is many times stronger than a rattlesnake. Luckily, their bite is smaller than a rattlesnake and they usually only bite humans when they are disturbed.

So it might be worth a couple extra minutes of your time to examine them grapes and give them an extra rinse before digging in.
