This past weekend, I had to make a quick trip to the Newburgh Walmart. I usually limit my big box store trips to one/month but this June, I broke my rule and had to go twice. I overspend and I hate having to wait in line for forever. It's not my favorite thing to do but I felt very blessed to wait in line a little longer during this particular trip.

After I swept the store for all my items, I chose a line that only had only one group of people in it. No matter what, I ALWAYS choose the slowest line. ALWAYS. Anyway, I didn't immediately notice anything different about the group because I was in my usual self-absorbed rush. After the barrage of thoughts about the items I picked up and the amount I was about to spend flew through my head, I began to focus on the people in line ahead of me.

There were four older men, and a woman who was their caretaker. The men were all special needs and at Walmart to buy basic supplies and snacks. I began to watch them to see how they interacted with each other and how she interacted with them. Multiple personality tests have revealed that I tune into people's emotions and interpersonal communication cues. I can't help it!

It was amazing to see how much these men cared for each other. At one point, two of them put their foreheads together, closed their eyes, and smiled. But then, one of them almost ran over the caretaker with his motorized chair. She gave them a little bit of loving sass that made them all grin and she went about helping them each pay their bill. My heart pretty much melted into a puddle right then and there and I felt a bit of guilt for being aggravated that I "had" to go to Walmart that day.

I said a little prayer thanking God for allowing me to go to Walmart. Not only did I feel blessed that I can waltz into a store whenever I feel like it to buy pretty much whatever I need, but I was also fortunate enough to be able to witness the incredibly personal interactions of a group of people who happen to be a bit different than me. So, the next time you are feeling a little aggravated about your circumstance, I'd encourage you to look for the blessings around you. It's pretty amazing what you might learn.
