What Is Oxford Dictionaries’ Word of the Year for 2018?
Drumroll please (I'll give you a few seconds to make the drumroll sound)...Oxford Dictionaries has announced their Word of the Year for 2018! And the winner is...TOXIC!
For most of us, the adjective has always had a one-word definition...'poisonous'. But in 2018 the word has been used to describe more than just dangerous chemicals.
According to Oxford there has been a 45% increase in the number of times TOXIC has been searched for on their website. I guess that's one reason the word went on to beat out words like 'techlash' and 'gaslighting'.
In case you've already forgotten, here are the five previous words of the year...
- 2017: Youthquake
- 2016: Post-Truth
- 2015: the 'Face with Tears of Joy' emoji
- 2014: Vape
- 2013: Selfie
