Folklore and Total Solar Eclipse

Long before we had science and technology to help us figure out why the moon covered the sun, different cultures had some pretty wild theories. According to The Old Farmer’s Almanac, the solar eclipse folklore is full of some wild theories that are influencing some of the conspiracies of the 2024 Total Solar Eclipse.

In Norse culture, the gods put an evil enchanter, Loki, into chains. Loki got revenge by creating wolflike giants, one of which swallowed the Sun—thereby causing an eclipse.

Armenia: A dragon swallowed the Sun and Moon.
India: A dragon is trying to seize the Sun and Moon.
German Mythology: The hot female Sun and cold male Moon were married.
