It's showtime! ....or is it?

It seems like every couple of years a realistic looking movie poster or trailer comes around claiming to be the "official" poster or trailer for a cult classic movie's sequel. This week I've seen a poster shared for a Beetlejuice 2, and unfortunately, it's fake.

There's also a trailer that makes the rounds every now and again (you can see it below). Although, it looks realistic, unfortunately it's not an actual trailer. Lately it's been seen making the rounds on social media again. Unfortunately I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but the trailer is fake. In fact in the comments someone even called out the opening scene being from an Extra gum commercial.

Super bummed, I know! Like many people, I love Beetlejuice! To  this day it's remained one of my favorite movies. I grew up watching the animated Beetlejuice tv show too. Plus Michael Keaton was just made to play the famous bio-exorcist. And with a cast like Michael Keaton, Geena Davis, Alec Baldwin, Winona Ryder, along with director Tim Burton the movie was destined to be great!

I decided to do a little digging, and while I can't find any confirmation of a sequel, Warner Brothers are teasing something that has to do with Beetlejuice on their Instagram.  Check that out here.  It could be something as simple as a re-release?  Maybe even a reboot?  What about a sequel?

When I Googled Beetlejuice 2 I found an article from USA Today from April 2019. When Tim Burton was asked about the Beetlejuice sequel he simply said there was nothing going on with it.  And one of the original Beetlejuice screenwriters Larry Wilson said the following:

"The bottom line is, Tim Burton and Michael Keaton are not going to think about a 'Beetlejuice' sequel unless it somehow catches the energy of the first film. And that’s not easy, 'Beetlejuice' really was lightning in a bottle. But there have been discussions since it really shocked everyone in 1988. (source)

So I'm not really sure what the answer is. I can confirm the poster art you've been seeing, and the trailer for a supposed "Beetlejuice 2" are fake.  However in September maybe we'll finally get the real deal, I guess we'll have to wait and see.  Personally, I'm on the fence about the entire sequel thing. On one hand I LOVE Beetlejuice and would love to see the magic of Michael Keaton as him on the big screen again. However that being said, the movie is a classic, and I'm not sure we should mess with a good thing. Beetlejuice is already living on in a new Broadway show, maybe we should just allow it to take on new forms, without trying to re-create the magic that's already happened.

What do you think, should there be a Beetlejuice sequel, or should we just let a good thing be a good thing?
