I Was That Kid Who Tagged Along

Okay, so let me paint you a picture.

I'm an only child, which means every family vacation growing up was me, Mom, Dad, and whatever hotel they'd racked up Marriott points at. And really, that was fine. I can't complain I had great family vacations growing up. But, like anyone, the older I got, the more I wanted to do things my way, which apparently means booking solo trips and staying in the middle of nowhere with zero room service and zero regrets.

Fast forward to me living in the Evansville area, still knocking things off my bucket list, and realizing there are some really beautiful places within a day's drive that most people completely overlook.

How I Found It

I found this place the way I find most of my adventures: falling down an Airbnb rabbit hole late at night. I was originally researching cabins near hiking and somehow landed on this tiny cabin tucked into the woods in the middle of Amish country and I was immediately sold.

The town is East Bernstadt, Kentucky. Population 800. And even though it's a tiny town out there in the middle of nowhere, it is worth it. And I am going back.

What the Cabin Is Actually Like

There are three small cabins on the property, each with their own bed and bath, pet friendly, and honestly perfect for one or two people. The Amish hosts are incredibly kind and check in to make sure you are settled and comfortable. At one point an Amish boy rode up to my cabin on a horse and showed me tricks. I am not making that up.

The peace out there is real. Like, weight lifted off your shoulders, phone does not matter, just breathe kind of peace. Here's the link to see more photos just in case you think of booking a small getaway. Airbnb Cabin East Bernstadt Kentucky

A Few Things to Know Before You Go

Reception is not great out there, so download your playlists before you go and make sure you fill up on gas before heading out because the nearest town is about 20 minutes away.

That town is London, Kentucky and it is the cutest little surprise. Great restaurants, local shops, totally worth the drive when you want a little life around you.

Where to Eat

While I was in London I ate at a place called Local Honey and it was delicious. Highly recommend making it a stop whether you go for lunch or dinner.

The Location Could Not Be Better

East Bernstadt is only a couple of hours from Gatlinburg, Asheville, and parts of Virginia, so if you want to turn this into a longer road trip the location could not be more perfect. I am already planning my next trip back.

My Final Thoughts

If you have been craving a real reset, not a resort, not a pool bar, just you and some quiet, this is it. It might only be a town of 800 people but you will be glad you went.
