Labor Day weekend is often associated with celebrations, barbecues, and travel. Unfortunately, it’s also one of the most dangerous times on the road. Alcohol and drug use during holiday weekends contributes to a sharp increase in accidents, injuries, and fatalities.

Evansville Police Department Joins Statewide Effort

From August 16 through August 30, 2024, Evansville officers will join forces with law enforcement across Indiana to crack down on impaired driving. Increased patrols, targeted enforcement, and public awareness campaigns are all part of this initiative.

This effort isn’t just about writing tickets; it’s about saving lives.

Sgt. Nick Winsett of the Evansville Police Department emphasized the importance of community cooperation:

“Our top priority is keeping our roads and our community safe. The Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over campaign is an awareness effort to get the message out that drunk driving is illegal and it kills. Let’s make this a partnership between law enforcement and drivers.”

This statement underlines the fact that enforcement works best when combined with community support.

Sobriety Checkpoints: What Drivers Should Expect

Drivers can expect sobriety checkpoints throughout the Evansville area. At these checkpoints, officers will look for signs of impairment, unsafe driving behaviors, and ensure drivers are complying with Indiana’s traffic laws. While some may see checkpoints as inconvenient, they are proven to deter dangerous behavior and save lives.
