The Right (and Surprisingly Wrong) Way to Fill Your Pool This Summer

School is out, and the weather is warming up, which means that swimming pools all across the land will soon be opening. As you know, a pool isn’t much good if it doesn’t have any water, so your first step is likely filling up the pool or at least topping it off.

Whether you're a brand-new pool owner or you’re a seasoned vet, there’s one surprising detail you need to know before filling up your pool this season. Believe it or not, there is a right and wrong way to do it.

For generations, the tried and true method for filling a swimming pool has always been as follows: grab the garden hose, turn on the faucet, stick it in the pool, and wait for that bad boy to fill up. Easy, right? Technically, yes. But according to the Evansville Water & Sewer Utility, there’s one crucial mistake you could be making, and that is submerging the hose below the waterline.

There's a right way and a wrong way to fill a swimming pool with a garden hose. Never submerge the hose below the waterline. The correct way to fill a pool with a garden hose is to keep the hose above the waterline, creating an air gap.
