This past Saturday, CenterPoint Energy hosted “An evening with Lilly King” benefitting Granted, a local nonprofit that not only grants the wishes of kids with life-threatening or terminal illnesses, they also provide support to families beyond the wish.

Lilly King Gives Back to Her Community

Before she auctioned off some personally signed items, Lilly King talked about the three key moments in her life that led her to become a Gold Medal Olympian swimmer.

8-Year-Old Lilly Discovered How to Work Hard

It may seem hard to believe, but Lilly King was not always the fastest swimmer in her class. Lilly swam at a clinic in Mt. Vernon, Indiana when she was eight, and she was the slowest kid there. In spite of that, she was encouraged by a quote from the instructor.

'I was never the most talented swimmer, but I was able to outwork everybody.'

That's a pretty powerful statement and Lilly sticks by her work ethic to this day.

Winning Attitude

Fast forward five years and Lilly was even more optimistic about winning. She won that state title, and that's when she knew that she could talk herself into doing anything.

Setting Records at 16

The third key moment in Lilly's life that led her to gold, was at the age of sixteen. She won the Junior Nationals, and because the fastest swimmer in her age group. This lit a fire that basically carried Lilly on a wave to the Olympic torch.
