Nothing creates a buzz in a small town like spotting a celebrity. The big question is always why the celebrity is here, and how can we meet them without being a weirdo? Okay, that last question is clearly mine.

Why Celebrities Visit Southern Indiana

When Ben Savage visits Gibson County, it is a low-key big deal. But, we know that his wife's family lives here, so that is a logical reason for him to be in Indiana.

You might see Don Mattingly around Evansville when it isn't baseball season. His family is here, and there is a new pizza spot pretty much dedicated to Donny Baseball.

Three Visits - Two Weeks

Actor John Schneider stopped in New Harmony, Indiana on April 8 to celebrate his birthday, and he watched the eclipse with the locals. Talk about a once-in-a-lifetime experience! During his visit, he said that New Harmony, Indiana should be on your bucket list to visit.

I wasn't able to hop in (or over) the car and try to meet him. But this time he seemed to be on a mission with his visit.

In Search of Smallville?

New Harmony isn't the only Southern Indiana town getting some attention from Jonathan Kent, I mean John Schneider. On Saturday, April 20, he shared a photo in Santa Claus, Indiana with Santa himself.

John Schneider is traveling in an RV. It's not a tour bus or anything fancy. In fact, between stops at golf courses, he seems to be working on it a lot. There are a ton of fake spam accounts, but this is the real one to follow John Schneider on Facebook.

From comedies to dramas to reality television, to arguably one of the most popular science-fiction series ever created, Indiana has had its fair share of Hollywood productions use a location in the state to serve as a "home base," if you will, for its story. Some of these you've likely never heard of, and some you may be a massive fan of.

Outside the major cities, the Hoosier state is full of tiny little towns you've probably passed through on your way to one of those cities. Most of them are likely 100 to 150 years old, or older, and have been around far longer than the large metropolitan areas such as Indianapolis, Fort Wayne, South Bend, and Evansville. Typically, they were started by early settlers who found their way to the state and decided to make it home. Eventually, others would join them, and a community was formed. Over time, as the surrounding areas grew, most of them were folded into those areas and governed by the nearest city or county's governing body officially making them "unincorporated," meaning they did not have their own formally organized municipal government.

A scroll through Wikipedia's long list of unincorporated communities in Indiana shows several of them have names that by today's standards would be considered weird, quirky, or just downright right funny. These are my 40 favorities.
