Star-Lord is stuck in neutral for the time being. According to Guardians of the Galaxy director James Gunn, the third installment of the film franchise won't begin until after he's completed editing on his current movie, The Suicide Squad.

It's a busy time for Gunn who has his hands in both film franchises, but he clarified his current status while responding to a fan on an Instagram post. The director had posted on Instagram about a gift he had received from Marvel Studios and within the comments section a fan had asked, "Are you filming Suicide Squad then going to do Guardians 3 afterwards?” Gunn responded, “You are correct. But I won’t start on Vol 3 [of the Guardians] until after Squad is finished editing, not filming.”

The Suicide Squad is set for release on Aug. 6, 2021, while the third Guardians of the Galaxy installment does not currently have a release date. According to ComicBook.com, the principal photography for the film is expected to last for three months in Atlanta before heading off to Panama for an additional month. They piece the timeline for the principal photography wrapping at the end of January 2020, with the film estimated to arrive in summer 2022.

Meanwhile, Gunn's Suicide Squad work likely solved a TV mystery from this past weekend. Though he appeared in the opening credits, Pete Davidson was conspicuously absent from the season premiere of Saturday Night Live this weekend. However, as Deadline pieced together, Davidson was spotted with the cast of The Suicide Squad, posing for an Instagram photo after they all caught a screening of The Joker film. The photo was posted on Saturday, and with Gunn currently working in Atlanta it is suspected that Davidson was filming with the cast instead of appearing on Saturday Night Live.
