The National Weather Service in Paducah is warning residents in western Kentucky, southern Indiana, and southern Illinois that there is increasing likelihood that a significant winter storm is going to impact the region Sunday and Monday. Earlier today, the NWS shared the latest guidance that suggests a rather mixed bag of precipitation from that approaching storm. The amount and kind of precipitation you see will depend on where in the Tristate you live.

Here's the 'first guess' at the type of precipitation that we'll get.

As you can see, much of the Tristate (Evansville, Owensboro, and surrounding areas) currently rests in band #2- which promises a mix of sleet, snow and freezing rain. Of course, the National Weather Service concedes that this track could shift, but residents are urged to expect potentially significant travel impacts.

Here's the current extended forecast as it stands New Year's Day:

Sunday- Snow, freezing rain, and sleet likely before noon, then rain, snow, freezing rain, and sleet. Mostly cloudy, with a high near 33.
Sunday Night- Rain before midnight, then rain, snow, freezing rain, and sleet likely. Cloudy, with a low around 25.
Monday- A chance of rain, snow, freezing rain, and sleet. Mostly cloudy, with a high near 34.
Monday Night- A slight chance of snow. Mostly cloudy, with a low around 16.
Like the National Weather Service, AccuWeather is predicting a wintry mix for our area as well. The forecasting site says the bulk of that precipitation will fall Sunday night into Monday morning.
