Local Theatergoers Can See Hadestown This Week In Owensboro

I saw Hadestown for the first time- at a Wednesday matinee- on March 11th, 2020. Less than 24 hours after experiencing it, the show shut down. That was over five years ago, but I remember it like it was yesterday.

COVID-19 SHUTS DOWN BROADWAY

On Thursday, March 12th, 2020, all 41 Broadway theatres closed their shows and locked their doors. The COVID-19 pandemic was sweeping through New York City. I flew into town on Tuesday, the 10th. I spent that evening watching Jagged Little Pill at the Broadhurst. The next afternoon, I settled into my seat at the Walter Kerr to watch Hadestown.

Though I went into the show fully aware of the story of Orpheus and Eurydice, the show stopped my heart. I expected it to pack a punch and it did. The only thing more powerful than Greek mythology's most gut-wrenching heartbreak was the shutdown that happened the next day. Broadway was full of stories needing to be told, but the pandemic made sure there was no way to tell them.

I suppose I sat in the theatre that afternoon weighed down a bit by the news headlines that were circulating. New Yorkers and theatre fans new something was lurking. We just didn't know it was going to be a temporary end to the memories, the magic, and those powerful moments that unfold on stage.

HADESTOWN AT THE RIVERPARK CENTER IN OWENSBORO

All these years later, I am getting the chance to experience Hadestown again. The new touring company is currently building the show at the RiverPark Center in downtown Owensboro and it will premiere Friday evening at 7pm. I have my tickets and can't wait to take another trip down to Hades. It's been a long time coming.
