TN, IN, & KY Theaters Issue Warnings About Singing

At face value, I was thinking there was a big special effects movie being released that might be problematic for folks with a sensitivity to flashing lights. I also thought it was nothing more than a violence warning, even though that's what MPAA ratings are for, in the first place.

No, it's not about Oscar-winning CGI or gratuitous gore; it's about SINGING. I grew up not being allowed to sing at the dinner table. Now that I AM all grown up, if I wanted to see the sure-to-be-a-blockbuster Wicked, I'll have to zip my lip in my theater seat as well. I suppose if talking is universally frowned upon at the movies, I guess you can't go belting out show tunes either.

Singing Along Forbidden at AMC Theaters During 'Wicked'

The AMC movie theater chain, which has locations in Tennessee, Indiana, and Kentucky, has issued a warning forbidding singing along with the Broadway musical adaptation. Despite the fact that fans of the show know these tunes like the backs of their hands, they'll need to button it up while viewing. In fact, the message the popular chain has been showing on its screens also prohibits talking (of course), texting (naturally), wailing, flirting, and name-calling. I very much appreciate their sense of humor, although part of me thinks there is ZERO irony in that message.

But fear not, Elphaba wannabes, your day is coming. Variety reports that sing-along screenings will premiere on 1,000 screens on Christmas Day.

Wicked opens Friday, November 22nd.
