Infamously Funny Scene from Oscar-Winning Film Shot in This Old KY Store
One of Hollywood's go-to genres for time immemorial has been the biopic. Sometimes, they are wildly successful, both with critics and at the box office. Other times, you get one and not the other.
In 1980, both critics AND audiences fell in love with what might be my favorite biopic, Coal Miner's Daughter. To me, it isn't just about the life and legendary success of Loretta Lynn. It's also about the reality of living in impoverished eastern Kentucky in the 1940s and 1950s. Every actor delivered, in spades, but it was Sissy Spacek as the country icon who racked up every major award she could get her hands on, including the 1981 Best Actress Oscar.
Spacek owned every scene she was in, and that includes one that has sort of taken on ICON status among lovers of the film.
(By the way, the jury still remains OUT on the effects of bologna stated in the film.)
Coal Miner's Daughter's authenticity comes not only from great writing and acting but also from location shooting. And the scene above was shot in an old country store that, thankfully, still stands today. In 1980, it was J.D. Maggard's Country Store; today, it's simply Maggard's Grocery. Located in Letcher County, the store attracts fans of the movie to this day. (Start at the 2:30 mark.)
According to Locations Hub, Maggard's Cash Store is still open, although I have no date on this information:
The business has been in business since 1914 and has been family owned ever since. Named after the founder, JD's daughter, Olga June Maggard now runs the store. She said the fact that they are still open is a big deal. "There is no mom and pop stores left, this is about all that's left," said Maggard.
Whether or not it's still open, the store IS still there. And if you're a fan of movie locations, or just this movie, in particular, you owe it to yourself to stop by if you're in the neighborhood.
And if it IS still open, order a bologna (baloney) sandwich.
