There's a cat café coming to Owensboro!

It has already been a banner year for SPARKY- Saving Paws Animal Rescue of Kentucky. Over the last twelve months, the foster-based rescue here in Owensboro has partnered with Friends of the Shelter in Ohio County to open a low-cost spay and neuter clinic. That clinic is off to an impressive start. SPARKY's John Austin estimates they've already served about 500 dogs and cats.

Also, with the funding from a William and Marilyn Young Foundation grant, SPARKY has opened a pet pantry. It "helps furnish food and other supplies to pet parents who are struggling to keep their pets in their homes." John's wife Bridget says, "We are currently in search of a larger facility because we feel we've outgrown where we are." The overall goal, of course, is to provide families the essentials they need to care for their pets in hopes of keeping them out of the already overburdened animal welfare system.

Last night, at SPARKY's 8th Annual Bark in Style Fashion Show, the local rescue made another big announcement.

The Handsome Cat Café will be opening soon and "will be a relaxing place to come check out some of the cats SPARKY has available for adoption." The tagline for the cafe is "Where Best Friends Meet" and, like in Evansville, would-be cat owners will be able to visit the cafe, hang out with available cats, and enjoy a snack, some coffee and other available beverages.

More details- including the location and the coffee partner- are coming soon.
