I'm calling it the Grand Ole Opry of Louisiana. Over the weekend, I had the chance to visit Fred's Lounge in Mamou (pronounced Mah-Moo) and enjoy the two-hour radio show that broadcasts live there every Saturday morning.

I flew to New Orleans last week for the 2025 Philanthropy Southeast conference. When it ended, I traveled up to see friends in Alexandria, who pitched the idea of going to Fred's. My sister-from-another-mother Shawne promised, "It's iconic in every sense of the word."

She wasn't kidding. Shawne, her sister-in-law Jennifer (who was armed with a portable Bloody Mary bar), our friend Gary, and I piled into the SUV, threw back some 8am Fireball shots, and headed to Fred's.

IT. WAS. A. BLAST. While the Grand Ole Opry is celebration of country music (with some square dancing thrown in for fun on Saturday nights), Fred's is a celebration of everything Cajun- from the lively and infectious Cajun/Zydeco music to the Saturday morning two steppin' and occasional Cajun Waltz.

After mastering (debatable) the Two Step, Jennifer and I decided that we needed to throw in some partner stunts. Let's put it this way. If Fred's hosted their own version of Dancing With the Stars, we would have taken home the mirror ball trophy (possibly by force).

THE LEGEND 1050 AM KVPI

The radio show airs on The Legend 1050AM KVPI and is sponsored. Just like at The Grand Ole Opry, the announcer (Mike Perron) reads commercials in between songs played live by the band. The band, of course, is playing incredible Cajun music from right in the middle of the dance floor. According to the owner of Fred's, there are four bands that rotate.

While there, I noticed another superbly fun 'radio' coincidence.

The banner that rests where the announcer sits mentions KVPI's FM sister station, which happens to sit on the dial at 92.5. That's exactly where my station sits, so my friends and I (and WBKR) got a fun shout out from Mike during the show!

Fred's Lounge is full of characters. I would be lying if I said we weren't among them Saturday morning. It's one of the most unique and fun experiences I have ever had and I will definitely go back.

At Fred's, there are just a few simple rules to follow, which are printed on the back of the lounge's souvenir t-shirts.

I can't recommend this place enough. If you ever find yourself in the middle of Louisiana, make sure you visit Cajun country and go to Fred's.

Situated in the heart of the Cajun Music Capital of the World, Fred's is EVERYTHING. It's friends, fun, and fabulous.
