I've been seeing more and more posts akin to this one on Facebook. I've read them but largely moved on without giving them another thought.

Coyote Mating Season Could Spell Trouble for Pet Owners

First of all, Thousand Oaks is in California, but this warning applies just about everywhere since coyotes can be found in every state except Hawaii. But yes, I found it interesting reading, but that was about it. Then last night, I heard multiple coyote howls from off in the distance. That was all I needed to hear.

I've been seeing posts about coyotes more often these days, and last month there was one featuring security camera footage that would make any pet owner shudder. Sure enough, when it's mating season, city limits mean nothing to amorous and aggressive coyotes seeking a mate and--worse--a meal.

Again, I have read the various accounts of coyotes on the move with great interest, but none of it really hit home until I heard the howling on MY side of Daviess County. And because it IS mating season and these things are everywhere, I could have inserted the name of any county. But HERE is where I live.

Here's the thing...we have a lot of cats (and a few dogs) in our neighborhood, and one of them is mine. And she likes being outdoors. We have a wooded area near the house, and it's her playground.

And now, after what I heard--and, granted, it was very far away; I could tell--I'm taking all of this quite seriously. If you're a pet owner, I bet you are, too.
