I have the utmost respect for the farming community. For one thing, I enjoy eating, and farmers make that possible. I can't imagine what life in that industry is like, but I'm always thankful they're there. Consequently, I would never presume to think I know what they want or need to make their jobs run more smoothly.

More than a decade ago, McLean county farmer Jonathan Miller taught me how to drive a tractor. It was one of the coolest things I've ever done, even IF I almost drove us into a big old ditch.

Unfortunately, I forgot what I learned, but I could pick it up again. I felt like I was a quick study. I've also always wanted to know what it's like to drive one of those gigantic combines, but that's probably a taller order. From my earliest years, farm equipment has fascinated me.

Ag Drones

I issued that disclaimer at the outset only because I don't know how farmers feel about agriculture drones, a wonderful new piece of spray technology that helps farmers map and treat fields. They seemed to be a big hit at the National Farm Machinery Show in Louisville.

Actually, in the following demonstration, the announcer mentions how farmers are becoming more accepting of the technology, but I'll keep my disclaimer right where it is just the same.

Farm Drones

I'm a huge fan of drones, so, yes, this has me captivated. But this time, if I learn how to use one (big if), I will not forget my education. In the meantime, I need to get back in the tractor seat for a refresher course.

LOOK: See how much gasoline cost the year you started driving

To find out more about how has the price of gas changed throughout the years, Stacker ran the numbers on the cost of a gallon of gasoline for each of the last 84 years. Using data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics (released in April 2020), we analyzed the average price for a gallon of unleaded regular gasoline from 1976 to 2020 along with the Consumer Price Index (CPI) for unleaded regular gasoline from 1937 to 1976, including the absolute and inflation-adjusted prices for each year.

Read on to explore the cost of gas over time and rediscover just how much a gallon was when you first started driving.
