Extreme Heat Forces Ellis Park to Change Holiday Weekend Racing Schedule

If you're from the Tri-State, you know that every summer heat conversation starts the same way:

"It's HOT, Don!"

Well... it's HOT, Don. And it's about to get even hotter.

The heat has become so intense that Ellis Park is changing its racing schedule to protect guests, staff, and horses during the dangerously hot conditions expected across the region.

Extreme Heat Warning Issued for the Tri-State

The National Weather Service has issued an Extreme Heat Warning that remains in effect until 8 p.m. CDT (9 p.m. EDT) Friday.

Forecasters say heat index values between 105 and 112 degrees are expected across:

  • Southern Illinois
  • Southwest Indiana
  • Western Kentucky
  • Southeast Missouri

The combination of extreme temperatures and high humidity significantly increases the risk of heat-related illnesses, especially for anyone working or spending time outdoors.

Officials recommend:

  • Drink plenty of water.
  • Avoid prolonged time in direct sunlight.
  • Wear lightweight, loose-fitting clothing.
  • Schedule outdoor activities for early morning or evening.
  • Check on neighbors, relatives, and anyone without reliable air conditioning.

How Hot is Too Hot for Horses to Ride?

According to Horse Illustrated, riding a horse is highly discouraged or dangerous when the combined air temperature (in Fahrenheit) and relative humidity reaches or higher. Above 180, conditions can be life-threatening as a horse's cooling systems become largely ineffective.
