Illinois River Town Named One of America’s Prettiest
Illinois is home to many beautiful towns along rivers. Did you know one of those towns just so happens to be considered one of the prettiest in America?
Why River Towns Shine in Every Season
The best part is that river towns are great any time of year. You can visit during any season: spring, summer, winter, or fall. Celebrate Christmas, Halloween, or the 4th of July at a great river town, and it's going to be a memorable experience.
National Travel Experts Rank America’s Prettiest River Towns
Travel experts, Love Exploring, took a good look at some of the most beautiful river towns in America, and while they listed twenty-one of the very best, you knew the list wouldn't be complete unless there were some love going to one in Illinois.

While there was plenty to choose from in Illinois, only one made Love Exploring's list: Galena.
Tucked into the rolling hills of northwest Illinois, Galena flows gently alongside its namesake river. This 19th-century town once boomed on lead mining, but today it’s known for its preserved brick buildings and quietly elegant charm.
A weekend here means antique browsing, vineyard visits, and scenic walks that seem designed to be taken slowly. Whether you stay in a historic inn or a ranch house, Galena’s unhurried pace invites you to pause and savor the small-town beauty.

I've been to Galena so many times in just about every season that I can't even begin to tell you when it's a better time to go. If you haven't been, make the trek. Galena deserves the accolades it receives and is definitely one of America's prettiest river towns.
