It's official. We're in the "dead of winter", and even though Mother Nature hasn't treated us Northern Illinoisans too terrible yet, cabin fever is beginning to set in. My family is itching for a getaway right now, but our budget won't allow for an extravagant vacation...so what can we do?

Sure, we can take the kids to the museum, movies, skating, bowling, etc., but I know a quick day outing is not going to scratch our need-to-get-away itch. When it comes to places to get away in Illinois, I'm not very picky. All I want is a family-friendly and relaxing place to stay that is located close to cool places to see and do.

1. Hilton Chicago - This hotel is located in the South Loop district of Chicago so it is close to many popular attractions like the Shedd Aquarium, Field Museum, Adler Planetarium and more.

2. Eagle Ridge Resort and Spa in Galena - This beautiful resort has a full-service spa, an indoor pool, sledding, ice skating, snowshoeing, AND over President's Day weekend they host a Winter Carnival the whole family will love.

3. Chestnut Mountain Resort in Galena - This resort is awesome for families who want to have outdoor fun skiing and snowboarding, plus it's located just a short distance from the great shopping and dining in downtown Galena. (My family has stayed here before and loved it!)
