If you feel like every baby you've met lately has a pretty common first
name, there's a reason why.
According to the Social Security Administration, the most popular baby names weren't super unique or one-of-a-kind. Actually, a lot of people share these names.
Luckily, my name didn't make the list of the most popular. It used to for a really long time! "Emily" was ranked at the top for nearly twelve years before Emma, Emmy, an Emilias came into the world.
The most popular names in Illinois are so much more basic than Emily, though.
Can you take a guess at what they are?
In other states, you'd be surprised at the top names.
"In Alabama, old-school classic names like William, John and James dominate for boys. Meanwhile in Hawaii, Kai and Kaia both ranked very high, but are pretty rare in other states." [wgntv]

Illinois revealed Olivia and Liam were the top names around here. Go figure! The SSA always does a huge breakdown of trending names and it's never surprising to see the most common names rank so high. It'll always be that way!
Noah, Mia, Oliver, and Charlotte also made the top baby names in Illinois. Sounds about right, those are common names that will probably never fade out.

I'm all for unique names, just not crazy spellings. Life is already pretty hard, so why make our kids' names even more difficult for people to pronounce? It's just not worth the trouble, in my opinion. That's probably why Olivia and Liam ranked so high; they're easy names to spell, read, and pronounce.
So, if you're expecting or planning ahead for a future baby, make sure it's a name you really, really love and it's fitting for a child and adult.
