
USI Releases Statement After Report of Walking Trail Incident Goes Viral
The University of Southern Indiana has released an official statement on Facebook after a post detailing an incident on the campus walking trails went viral.
The Witness Contacted USI Campus Security
The claim makig the rounds on social media was from a woman who allegedly withnessed a man step out behind another woman who was running on the trails on Evansville's west side.. The witness did contact campus security.
Security Footage of the Incident Was Reviewed
University security had the witness help them review security footage. In their statement, the university says it was determined that the man in question was not participating in "suspicious behavior and the situation reported was a misunderstanding."

'See Something, Say Something'
USI did say in their statement that they thank the witness, reminding everyone the important of "if you see something, say something."
We take the safety of our students, faculty, staff and visitors seriously. During investigation of this incident patrols of the USI trails were increased by both USI Public Safety and the Vanderburgh County Sheriffs who serve the USI campus. As fair-weather approaches, we will continue to increase patrols in and along our trails.
How to Report Suspicious Activity to USI Public Safety
USI encourages anyone who witnesses something they deem to be suspcious on campus to contact USI Public Safety Immediately by calling 812-492-7777. They also encourage the use of the Rave Guardian app, which they say can be found on the university's public safety website.
Safety Tips For Those Who Use the USI Trails
For those who utilize the trails at USI, campus safety recommends you practice safety measures.
- Stay aware of your surroundings.
- Walk or run with a friend or make sure someone knows where you are and when you plan to return.
- If using headphones or earbuds, keep the volume down or only listen in one ear so you are better able to be aware of your surroundings.
