Flu Activity Reaches Highest Levels In Decades
Flu activity across the United States has surged to the highest levels seen in more than 25 years, and health officials say a new flu variant is playing a major role in the current spike. The strain, informally being referred to as “Super K,” is a new variant of the influenza virus known scientifically as subclade K.
Which States Are Seeing The Highest Flu Activity
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, more than 90 percent of states are now experiencing high or very high flu activity. Both Indiana and Kentucky are among the states currently listed in the “very high” category, the CDC says.
How The Super K Flu Variant Spread Worldwide
The World Health Organization reports that subclade K viruses first became especially prominent in Australia and New Zealand beginning in August 2025, before spreading globally. Over the last six months, the variant has been detected in more than 34 countries.

What Health Officials Say About Illness Severity
Like most influenza viruses, illness severity can vary widely from person to person. The WHO says most cases of infection with this strain are mild and resolve on their own. However, severe illness remains possible, particularly in higher-risk individuals.

How Severe Flu Cases Are Treated In Hospitals
Severe cases may involve respiratory distress, sepsis, acute respiratory distress syndrome, or multi-organ failure, and typically require urgent medical care and hospitalization.
The WHO emphasizes that clinical management of influenza continues to center on high-quality supportive care. That includes oxygen therapy, careful monitoring, hydration, and respiratory support when needed. These interventions are especially important in severe cases to improve outcomes.
Tips to Prevent The Spread Of The Flu Virus
Health officials continue to encourage vaccination, good hygiene practices, and staying home when sick, particularly as flu activity remains elevated across the region. People at higher risk for complications, including older adults, young children, pregnant individuals, and those with underlying health conditions, are encouraged to contact their healthcare provider promptly if they develop symptoms such as fever, cough, shortness of breath, or chest discomfort.

Who Should Seek Medical Care And When
Anyone experiencing severe breathing difficulty, confusion, persistent chest pain, or signs of medical distress should seek emergency care.
Flu levels typically peak during winter months, but with activity already near historic highs, health agencies are urging communities to take precautions, stay informed, and pay attention to symptoms as the season continues.
