
Indiana Has Highest Foreclosure Rate In The US
Indiana is leading the nation in a trend that could signal growing financial pressure for homeowners.
New data highlighted by Newsweek shows Indiana ranked #1 in the country for home foreclosure rates during the first quarter of the year.
Indiana Tops The Nation In Foreclosures
According to the report, one in every 739 housing units in Indiana had a foreclosure filing between January and March, the highest rate in the United States.
Nationwide, there were 118,727 properties with foreclosure filings during that same period. That marks a 6 percent increase from the previous quarter and a 26 percent jump compared to last year.
Midwestern and Southern states were hit the hardest overall, with South Carolina, Florida, Delaware, and Illinois rounding out the top five.

What The Numbers Actually Mean
A foreclosure filing does not automatically mean a homeowner will lose their home. It is the first legal step in the process, signaling missed mortgage payments and potential repossession.
However, experts say the rising numbers may point to broader financial strain.
Rob Barber, CEO of ATTOM, said increasing foreclosure activity could reflect “financial pressure” building for some homeowners and shifting housing market conditions.
Signs Of A Growing Trend
The data shows that foreclosure starts and completed foreclosures are also rising.
In March alone:
- 45,921 properties had foreclosure filings
- 30,334 homes entered the foreclosure process
- 5,229 foreclosures were completed
Mortgage rates may be playing a role. According to Freddie Mac, the average 30-year fixed rate climbed to 6.37 percent in early April after several weeks of increases.
What It Could Mean Going Forward
While foreclosure levels remain below historic highs, the upward trend suggests some homeowners may be struggling to keep up with rising costs.
For Indiana, the latest data puts the state at the center of that trend as the housing market continues to shift.
