The study, released by Gunther Volkswagen, surveyed drivers in every state to learn the most feared roads for winter driving in the nation. The top five most feared include:
- No. 5 -Alaska Route 11 aka James Dalton Highway
- No. 4 Pennsylvania Route 6 aka U.S. Route 6
- No. 3 Alaska Route 9 aka Seward Highway
- No. 2 New York's I-90
- No. 1 Alaska Route 2 aka Alaska Highway

Top Five Most Feared Roads in Indiana for Winter Driver
While not included in the top 5 or even the top 10, there were five roads in the Hoosier State that drivers feared most while driving in winter. Where are Indiana's most feared roads for winter driving?
- No. 151 Interstate 65 This north to south thouroughfare connects Gary, Indianaplolis, and Jeffersonvile.
- No. 140 Interstate 70 An important east to west thouroughfare, I-70 connects Terre Haute to Indianapolis.
- No. 112 Interstate 80/90 This Indiana toll road runs along the northern edge of the Hoosier State.
- No. 45 Interstate 69 The I-69 corridor connects Indianapolis to Evansville.
- No. 29 Interstate 74 This interstate runs across southeastern Indiana.
Indiana Has a Lot of Rural Areas Between Cities
Many of these roads spanning miles through rural Indiana areas to connect city to city, making them susceptible to snow drifting. It is no surprise that they would elicit fear in drivers. Fortunately, there are steps that drivers can take to reach their winter destinations safely.
