New year, new laws.

We could be in for some changes on the road before too long. We told you about the possibility of adding white lights to traffic lights to signal that a self-driving car is at an intersection. But there's a new law in Illinois with a new flashing light to look out for.

New for 2025, Illinois has passed HB 4255, which you'll definitely see on the roads at some point this year. Here's what to know about it.

It's An Emergency

The new law is pretty much the new road emergency color. It allows tow trucks to use flashing green lights while they're at an emergency scene. Don't they kind of already use flashing yellow lights when loading up a smashed car? Basically, just look out for flashing lights.

HB4255 also allows police, fire, and first responders to use green lights "to indicate an emergency operations command post or incident command location". So if you see green lights on the side of the interstate, it's likely a crash and you need to scoot over a lane and probably be prepared to stop.

The bill was introduced last summer and originally asked that tow trucks be granted emergency red and blue oscillating lights, kinda like police cars have. It was amended a couple of times before they decided on green lights for tow trucks and green lights to represent an emergency scene for all first responders.

U.S. Government's Level 4 Do Not Travel List

Many people travel at the end of the year for the holidays or to use up vacation days that may expire. These countries have a Level 4: Do Not Travel advisory issued on them by the U.S. Government and should be avoided.
