Indiana Offering Rebate To Hoosiers Who Install A Tornado Safe Room
In recent years, the tri-state area has noticed a change in weather patterns, with storms becoming increasingly severe. Some scientists suggest that tornado alley and Dixie alley have shifted, the regions where tornadoes are most common during tornado season. Indiana has seen more tornadoes in the last few years than is typical for this region. Indiana's Department of Homeland Security has provided endless information regarding the increase in tornadoes in the regional area. For this reason, the state is now offering a rebate for those who install "safe rooms" on their property.
Who, What, And How Much The Rebate Is Good For
Much to my surprise, the Indiana Department of Homeland Security started this program in 2015. The rebate is funding-dependent and is only awarded in years that Indiana remains compliant with certain FEMA-related standards. For more information on the program and to apply for the rebate, check out the Indiana Department of Homeland Security's website. The application period is currently open and runs through April 15. At that time, IDHS will randomly select 50 applicants for review of the rebate. If approved, the selected applicants will receive reimbursement of up to 75% of their safe room installation, with a maximum reimbursement of $5,000. Of course, some requirements must be met in order for your safe room to qualify under FEMA's strict criteria. Your safe room must be a hardened structure capable of handling winds as high as 250 mph. It must also be capable of providing "near-absolute protection" in severe weather events.
