A lighthouse on a private island with Smoky Mountain views?  This sounds like a dream, but it's real!

The Great Smoky Mountains

One of my favorite places to take a family vacation is the Smoky Mountains.  To me, the perfect long weekend getaway is a cabin near the Smoky Mountains.  The most relaxing feeling is waking up and having your morning coffee while overlooking the gorgeous mountain views.

Now, typically, a Smoky Mountain getaway has you thinking of cozy log cabins and winding roads up the side of a mountain.  Recently, I learned about one Smoky Mountain getaway that is not at all what you'd expect to find in Tennessee.  How about staying on Goat Island in your own private 3 story lighthouse?

A Tennessee Lighthouse

When I first saw photos of this Airbnb listing, I thought for sure it had to be fake.   A lighthouse in the mountains?  Get real! But upon further investigation, I found it IS a real place, and you can stay there.  Now this would certainly be a more unique destination for your next Smoky Mountain getaway!  Not only will you stay inside of a lighthouse at the base of the Smoky Mountains, it's also located near a small family farm.

An Island Getaway in the Mountains

What's unique about this stay (I mean, besides basically everything) is that the property is located on essentially an island in the Douglas Lake Resevoir.  No matter where you look, you'll see stunning views. You have access to all of Goat Island while staying at the lighthouse, and you may even get to see a goat or two as the family farm that owns the property has a farm with goats, chickens, and other animals.

The Lighthouse at Hunkerdown Hollow provides a waterfront experience at the base of the Smoky Mountains. This unique lodging brings you up close to the natural beauty of the Douglas lake resevoir. Home to over 200 species of bird, and recognized as a Bassmaster top 100 fishing lake, the Lighthouse puts you right in the middle of it all! While every window in the lighthouse has a water view, the top level boasts a 360 degree view of water & the treetops, to observe all the beauty of Douglas!
