Protect Your Phone From Indiana’s Freezing Cold – Avoid This Mistake
Did you know that this freezing cold weather we are experiencing in Indiana could be very bad for your phone?
I don't know about you, but I am not a fan of winter weather. The cold temperatures mixed with stinging wind, freezing rain, and snow are something that I dread every year. I'm the type of person who would rather be hot than cold. The cold just hurts. In any event, there is no escaping the cold weather we are about to experience this winter here in Indiana...unless of course, you travel down south for the winter.
Right now, at least in southern Indiana, we are experiencing a lot of freezing cold temperatures. We have had a few days with the temperature in the single digits, with more to come in the next week. It's common knowledge for us here to dress in layers and have a stocked emergency kit in our vehicles with blankets and snacks for when temps dip below zero, but have you ever taken measures to protect your phone, the one thing you carry at all times? If not, you probably should.
Protect Your Phone From Indiana’s Freezing Cold – Avoid This Mistake
We all know the effects that heat can have on your phone, however, did you know that extreme cold is just as damaging? According to an article from Batteries Plus, extreme cold can significantly impact your phone's performance, cause unexpected shutdowns, reduced battery life, and sluggish touchscreens. That all sounds like things that you don't want to have to deal with, but leaving it in the cold isn't the worst thing you can do to your phone during the winter...charging it is.

Batteries Plus says:
If your phone has shut down due to cold weather, the impact on your battery is only temporary. Permanent damage can occur, however, if you attempt to charge your phone at freezing temperatures.
Charging lithium-ion batteries at sub-freezing temperatures causes a buildup of lithium on the battery's anode known at lithium plating. The accumulation of lithium plating can permanently degrade your battery's capacity. Because of this, you should never attempt to charge your phone in an environment that is colder than 32℉.
How to Protect Your Phone Performance in Extreme Cold
If you plan on being outside for longer periods of time, and you have your phone on you, here are some things to keep in mind.
- Keep Your Phone Warm - Keep your phone tucked in one of your pockets that is close to your body. That body heat can help keep your phone warm. NEVER leave it in a cold, parked car.
- Monitor Battery Health - Freezing cold temperatures will cause the battery of your phone to drain faster.Fully charge your phone before taking it into a cold environment
- Adjust Phone Settings - You'll want to conserve the battery life of your phone. So close all unnecessary apps, lower your screen brightness, and turn on your battery-saver mode if possible. You'll also want to make sure to turn off WIFI.
- Avoid Sudden Temperature Changes - NEVER attempt to warm up your phone by placing it on a source of direct heat. If your phone battery dies and your phone shuts down in the cold, you will want to GRADUALLY warm it up before plugging it into a charger. Those fast transitions from cold to warm can cause condensation inside the phone which is a problem that you don't want to deal with.
