Indiana’s Most Expensive Cities to Heat a Home in Winter

It's no secret that heating a home during winter months can be expensive. If you live in these Indiana cities, you're paying the most to heat your home in the entire state.

This has been one of the coldest winters that Indiana has seen in a long time, and that frigid cold weather continues this week. You have likely looked at your electric/gas bill and about had a panic attack because it was extremely high in January. There are a few factors as to why that heating bill is frighteningly expensive. According to Midwest Electric:

• Most people spend more time at home in the cold weather, thus using more energy.
• Your heating system works much harder to keep your home comfortable in cold weather. Even if you don’t change your thermostat setting, it runs longer to heat your home. And if it’s an older furnace or heat system, it may have to work harder to keep you warm enough to combat those bone-chilling temperatures we experienced.
• Even gas heating systems use electricity to power the fan and distribute the warm air.
• Chances are, you took more hot showers, baths, and used more hot water in general.
• You may have also used space heaters and electric blankets more than usual, which can consume a lot of energy when left on for hours.

All of that adds up, thus resulting in much higher than usual heating bills. Recently, HomeGnome ranked 2025’s Most Expensive Cities to Heat a Home in Winter. To find the most expensive cities to heat a home, they compared nearly 500 of the biggest U.S. cities based on 3 categories. More specifically, HomeGnome looked at average electricity and gas bills (adjusted to average monthly income), average home sizes, and weather conditions, among 11 total metrics. As it turns out, eight cities in Indiana made the cut.

Living in the Evansville area myself, I'm not very surprised that the city landed so high on the list. I've certianly noticed my energy bill skyrocket, and I know that I am not the only one.
