In nature there's a phenomenon called "singing sand" and it is both cool, and kind of creepy!

Singing Sand

Singing sand is a phenomenon where sand can make a low humming sound that is created by friction between the grains of sand.  According to Trip Memos, sand that is composed of quartz and silica produces this specific sound, that sounds like a buzzing noise, but sometimes when you walk on it, it can sound kind of squeaky.

The sound is created by the friction between grains of sand, especially when they are dry and uniform in size. This rare acoustic occurrence provides a captivating experience for visitors, offering both a tactile and auditory connection to the natural world.

We've all walked on a beach and heard the signature "squeak" of sand beneath our feed, but have you ever heard the low hum of singing sand?  It's quite wild, and honestly, it sounds kind of eerie! Great Sand Dunes National Park actually caught a video of this phenomenon and you can hear it below, it almost sounds like bees buzzing.

You Can Hear This Phenomenon at Indiana Dunes National Park

The phenomenon of "singing sand" is actually quite rare, but there's a place in Indiana where you can hear it.  Indiana Dunes National Park is home to more than 15,000 acres of gorgeous scenery and of course the stunning shores of Lake Michigan.

Here is what the National Park Service has to say about Indiana Dunes National Park:

Lake Michigan's might has influenced Indiana Dunes for millennia. Wind and waves have shaped the land, leaving a rich mosaic of habitats along these 15 miles of Indiana coast. Over 50 miles of trails lead through shifting sand dunes, quiet woodlands, sunny prairies and lush wetlands. Known for its striking plant and bird diversity, it's easy to find inspiration throughout the park’s 15,000 acres.

Indiana Dunes National Park is a gem in the Hoosier State, with some views looking almost more like you're visiting the Gulf and not a lake in the midwest!
