It's never a dull moment at the Indiana Military Museum. I've toured the museum several times, as it's always worth coming back to given the amount of new artifacts arriving every week. The museum hosts several events each year, featuring living history exhibits, battle reenactments, and more. Later this fall, the museum plans to host yet another event, and this one will feature rides on a Huey helicopter.
What Is Riding in a Huey Helicopter Like?
I'm not exactly what you would call an "adrenaline junkie," but after riding in a Huey helicopter earlier this summer, it's safe to say I might be well on my way. It was definitely a new experience for me, and while it was scary at first, I had a ton of fun looking out over Evansville from the sky. As the aircraft was made for the military, it definitely didn't feature any plush seating accommodations, but I think that's what made the ride even cooler.
The event I attended in August was hosted by the Evansville Wartime Museum, which is another great place to learn about history. It featured a 1970 UH-1 Huey and its experienced crew, who made sure each of us stayed safe while having some fun. All riders first participated in a pre-flight briefing, which included information on how to safely enter and exit the aircraft. The crew was incredibly helpful and ready to answer any and all questions.
How Can I Ride in a Huey Helicopter?
If you missed the rides offered that day at the Evansville Wartime Museum, you'll have another chance to hit the skies at a different museum in southern Indiana. The Indiana Military Museum will host its "Huey Helicopter Day" on Saturday, October 5, 2024, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Eastern Time. The rides will be provided by Indiana Air Search and Rescue (IASAR), a nonprofit search and rescue organization dedicated to community service, the preservation of historic aircraft, and honoring veterans.
IASAR plans to fly in their UH-1H Huey, named "Dragonfly," which served several tours of duty in Vietnam. The aircraft was previously with the Maine National Guard and is now the "workhorse of the IASAR fleet." Rides will be provided on a first-come, first-served basis, and kids under 12 must be accompanied by an adult. While prices have not yet been announced, the previous year’s prices were $100 for adults and $50 for those aged 5 to 17. Updates will be posted on the Indiana Military Museum's Facebook page.
