Indiana Communities to Receive $140 Million in Matching Grants
Around $140 million is heading to Hoosier communities as part of the Fall 2024 Community Crossings Matching Grant Call.
As much as I loathe driving on U.S. Route 41 from Princeton to Evansville every day, I know the construction efforts will be worth it in the end. While it may look like orange cones as far as the eye can see, improving our roads and infrastructure will have a superb economic impact on our community. The State of Indiana, recognizing this, has just announced a new round of funding for future projects in over 200 Hoosier communities via the Community Crossings Matching Grant Program.
What Is the Community Crossings Matching Grant Program?
The Community Crossings Matching Grant Program was launched in 2016. It provides funding to cities, towns, and counties across Indiana to make improvements to local roads and bridges. Community Crossings is a partnership between INDOT and Hoosier communities—both urban and rural—to invest in infrastructure projects that catalyze economic development, create jobs, and strengthen local transportation networks.
"Community Crossings has been an annual highlight over the years," said Indiana Gov. Eric Holcomb in a recent press release. "The fact that nearly 14,000 miles of roads and over 200 local bridges have been replaced or rehabilitated through this program since 2017 is simply astonishing, in addition to the countless economic and quality-of-life benefits in hundreds of communities across Indiana."
How Much Funding Are Area Communities Getting?
Communities submitted applications for funding during a highly competitive call for projects in July. Funding for Community Crossings comes from the state’s local road and bridge matching grant fund. Since its inception in 2016, the Community Crossings initiative has provided more than $1.8 billion in state matching funds for local road improvement projects. Below, you can see the fall award amounts for some of our area communities:
- Vanderburgh County: $1,064,117.75
- Evansville: $952,628.09
- Warrick County: $1,395,128.95
- Posey County: $1,260,167.61
- Gibson County: $1,500,000.00
