You may or may not be surprised by how much Hoosiers are spending on groceries each year.

I don't know about you, but one of my least favorite things to do as an adult is to go grocery shopping. It costs so much to get so little nowadays. I'm sure you'll agree that when you go to the checkout to purchase your groceries, you are always shocked by the fact that you spent a whole lot of money, even though your cart isn't even half full. Oh, and don't even get me started on the price of groceries in a full cart. Now, we all have to worry about how much we will spend on a dozen eggs on top of everything else we need from the store.

Over the past few months, we've talked about grocery stores in Indiana a lot. Some of the topics have included the cheapest grocery stores, the most overpriced grocery stores, and the worst grocery stores with locations in the Hoosier State. Regardless of the grocery store, those items in your cart add up. So, if you had to guess, how much do you think the average Hoosier spends on groceries each year?

How Much the Average Indiana Household Spends on Groceries Each Year

It’s estimated that the average Indiana household will drop $6,909 on food (at home) each year. The findings were published in an analysis by the popular finance website, LendingTree.com. The website also estimates that the average Indiana home has an income of $92,643, which means households across the state spend only 7.5% of their income on groceries, LendingTree.com says.

That's a lot of money, just on groceries alone. The good news, however, is that the cost of groceries in Indiana is actually BELOW the national average. According to LendingTree, American households spent an average of $8,167 on food at home, or 7.4% of the average U.S. household income of $110,491.

Now, it should be noted that this data is from 2023, as it is the latest available data. That being said, it's safe to say that these totals have gone up, as we all have seen the rise in grocery prices over the past two years. But does the average grocery bill for Hoosiers sound pretty accurate, or do you feel like your family spends way more than that on food for home? Obviously, that is completely dependent upon family size, but I am curious to know if you feel like this number is higher or lower than you think it actually costs to feed your family at home each year.
