If you remember, there seemed to be a food product recall happening every week last year in 2024. We had all the usual suspects involved in these recalls, like salmonella, E. coli, listeria, metal shavings, plastic pieces, and other foreign materials.

However, unlike many of last year's food product recalls, the current recall on broccoli sold at Illinois Walmart stores has been changed to a Class-1 recall. Recalls are classified into a numerical designation (I, II, or III) by the FDA to indicate the relative degree of health hazard presented by the product being recalled.

Here's what they mean, according to the FDA's website:

Class I - a situation in which there is a reasonable probability that the use of, or exposure to, a violative product will cause serious adverse health consequences or death.

Class II - a situation in which use of, or exposure to, a violative product may cause temporary or medically reversible adverse health consequences or where the probability of serious adverse health consequences is remote.

Class III - a situation in which use of, or exposure to, a violative product is not likely to cause adverse health consequences.

The FDA Says That The Recall Involves Almost 6,000 Cases Of Broccoli Sold In Walmart Stores In 20 States

The official voluntary recall announcement came down around January 1st, but the recall was upgraded to a Class-1 recall earlier this week because the FDA believes there is a reasonable expectation of serious illness or even death if the recalled broccoli is consumed.

FDA.gov:

Braga Fresh is voluntarily issuing a precautionary advisory of a single production lot of washed and ready-to-eat 12oz Marketside Broccoli Florets with best if used by date Dec 10, 2024.

This product is past its best if used by date and is no longer in stores, but consumers may have frozen the item for later use. Consumers who have this product in their freezers should not consume and discard the product.

Here's What You're Looking For, And What To Do If You Find It In Your Fridge

You should be checking your refrigerator for 12-ounce packages of Marketside Broccoli Florets washed and ready-to-eat broccoli florets that were sold by Walmart.

According to the FDA's recall page, the products can be identified by having a UPC code 6 81131 32884 5 on back of bag, with Best if Used by Date Dec 10, 2024, and Lot Code: BFFG327A6 on front of bag. All potentially affected products are past their expiration date and no longer for sale.

If you find the recalled broccoli, make sure you don't eat it. Instead, throw it away or return it to your place of purchase for a full refund.
